Sun-Mi Shin

Conference interpreter for Korean ⇄ German

Hello, I am Sun-Mi Shin (pronounced: Sahn-mi)

I was born in Korea and have lived in Germany for over 25 years. Two languages, two cultures – that’s my everyday life. As a conference interpreter, I make sure that people understand each other – professionally, personally and culturally.

I was already interpreting at international trade fairs during my studies in Bochum – then as a student assistant, now as a professional linguist. My path led me to a master’s degree (film and television studies, art history, social psychology) at the Ruhr University Bochum and a master’s degree in conference interpreting at the renowned Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

Since then I have been accompanying conferences, business meetings, political delegations and more – on site in on location in NRW (Düsseldorf, Cologne, Ruhr area) or remotely via digital platforms.

Audio sample

When people from different language areas meet, the quality of language communication often determines whether a conversation turns into a real dialog.

A professional interpreter not only ensures the correct transmission of content – she creates trust, safeguards the atmosphere and keeps the flow of communication going.

I do not see my work as mere translation, but as active support for your conversations. I pay attention to tone of voice, nuances and cultural differences – so that you are understood as you mean it.

My claim: You should be able to concentrate fully on your content – I make sure that your message gets across clearly and effectively.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I book an interpreter?

The earlier the better – ideally several weeks in advance, especially for conferences or assignments lasting several days. Requests at short notice are possible, but not always feasible.

How does the preparation work?

After the assignment, I discuss the content with you and ideally receive documents, presentations or background information – so that I can prepare myself optimally and convey your technical language precisely.

What types of interpreting do you offer?

Simultaneous interpreting

I broadcast what is said almost simultaneously, e.g. at conferences or specialist events – usually with technology (headphones, booth).

Consecutive interpreting

I listen and interpret in sections afterwards – ideal for speeches, interviews or small groups.

Whispered interpreting

I whisper the interpretation directly to one or two people – e.g. for official appointments or on-site visits.

Liaison/accompanying interpreting

I accompany you on business trips, delegations or factory tours, for example – flexibly and personally.

Remote interpreting (online)

I also work via Zoom, Teams & Co. – professionally prepared, with high-quality technology.

Which type of interpreting is suitable for my event?

It depends on the format:

  • Simultaneous interpreting is suitable for conferences or larger events.

  • Consecutive interpreting is ideal for speeches, interviews or smaller groups.

I will be happy to advise you individually.

Do you also work online?

Yes – I offer remote interpreting via common platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams or Webex. I work with professional equipment for the best possible sound quality.

In which regions do you operate?

I am available in the entire NRW (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Ruhr area) – on request also nationwide or internationally. I can be booked flexibly online.
